ALICE SKOVE ELDREDGE
-SAVANNAH- Alice Skove Eldredge was born in Cleveland, Ohio on August 15, 1919 to Raymond and Gertrude Skove. She passed away January 27, 2012. She lived and loved Savannah, Georgia for 33 years.
Graduating from Maple Heights High School, Cleveland, Ohio, she attended Kent State University, Ohio and William Paterson University, New Jersey, earning a B.A. in Education. In subsequent years, she attended Georgia Southern and Armstrong Universities and was certified to teach the Gifted. She taught for more than 30 years in Ohio, New York, New Jersey, and Georgia, retiring from Boonton, New Jersey in 1979 and Savannah, Georgia in 1991.
While living on Long Island, New York, she organized the first Mercy Hospital Junior League in Garden City, Long Island, New York and Council of Girl Scouts for ten years recruiting troop leaders. She was active in the Episcopal Churches of Trinity, Roslyn, New York and St. Peters, Mountain Lakes, New Jersey. In Savannah she was a member of St. Francis of the Islands, and a past President of the Episcopal Church Women. For several years, she was a member of the Area Discernment Committee, Episcopal Church, Diocese of Georgia.
She was a member of "The Garden Club of Savannah" for 20 years 2010, served as Secretary , Chaplain, and also as a representative to the Savannah Area Council of Garden Clubs plus many other committees. In addition, she was active in the original Savannah on Stage, now The Savannah International Music Festival, the Savannah Council of World Affairs and the Telfair Academy Guild.
She was preceded in death by husband Herbert Elwin Eldredge, who was her beloved companion, her much loved parents Raymond and Gertrude Skove and her brother, Rodger Henry Skove.
Alice is survived by her close knit family, daughters Linda Hunter Joe, Kathy Kirby Tom, Alice Cowart Skip, Victoria Guy William, and son Stewart Eldredge Tami. Also grand children John and David Hunter, Sara and Hunter Kirby, Peter Eldredge , Kim Eldredge O'Connell , Matthew and Lucas Cowart and 16 great grand children. She is also survived by her fun friends, "The Lunch Bunch" Katherine Owens, Linda Garner, Wray Williamson, Pat Valentino, Sue Rendeiro, Mary Wadell, Jackie Davis, Martha Poole, and also her beloved and loyal companion Charline Edwards.
Memorial service will be at 3:00 P.M., Saturday, February 25th 2012 at St. Francis of the Islands.
